POSITION TITLE: Teacher Aide Substitute
TYPE OF POSITION: On-call as needed up to Forty (40) hours per week
REPORTS TO: Early Childhood Center Administrator

To assist the Teacher in providing a positive learning experience for children and families creating a successful environment that will promote the growth and development of up to 20 Head Start children and families. Aides will assist the teacher in all work as appropriate and with all other program components (health, nutrition, family services and mental health.) In addition to social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development; aides also assist the teacher as they prepare children for a successful transition into the public school system.

• High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
• Ability to acquire a CDA (Child Development Associate) credential within one year of employment.
• Demonstrated interest in and ability to work with young children, and their parents, of all socio-economic levels; knowledge of early childhood education practices; experience caring for young children in a childcare center or volunteering at Head Start.
• Willing to be trained in the field of early childhood development, including workshops and training sessions from Head Start and other agencies.
• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work as team member with staff and parents.
• Current CPR/First Aide Pediatric Certification (or obtain within 90 days)
• Valid Alaska Driver's license with reliable transportation and must pass required criminal background check.
• Policy Council Approval
• Prioritize own work load; manage multiple tasks; detailed oriented; ability to problem solve.
• Regular walking, standing, kneeling, stooping, bending, sitting on the floor, and carrying or lifting up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to apply Early Childhood Development theory in daily classroom activities and adapt to the individual needs of children.
• Experience in Head Start/Former Head Start Parent
• Previous experience working with Alaska Native/American Indian populations
• Working toward AAS or BA in Early Childhood Education (ECE)
• Performs as a team member within classroom, and when sharing classroom with other staff
• Provide support in all areas of the classroom maintaining a clean, safe and developmentally appropriate environment; as well assist in conducting developmental screenings, observations of children's behavior and in completing individualizations and child development checklist for each child.
• Prepare materials as needed to carry out the weekly lesson plans.
• During meal time helps children set up tables. While eating with the children will provide an atmosphere for family style meals; after meal clean up.
• Assists the Teacher in completing all required reports and distributing them to the appropriate people at the appropriate time; and assist in maintaining up-to-date files for all children.
• Assists and familiar with the following, but not limited to; laundry, sanitation codes and requirements, janitorial duties, building emergency and evacuation plan; keeping the building and playground in clean and safe condition and good repair at all times.
• Create a positive atmosphere for children; assist with effective transitions between activities, modeling for parents though the implementation of the curriculum and consistent use of appropriate discipline and problem solving skills (Project Achieve-Stop & Think).
• Substitute as necessary in the absence of the Teacher.
• Participate in regularly scheduled team meetings to plan for and deliver services across all components as well as trainings, and appropriate professional development activities (may include evenings and weekends).
• Maintains the utmost confidentiality at all times, according to the Confidentiality Policy, and guides other staff in confidentiality issues.
• Reports incidents of suspected child abuse and or neglect according to Program Director, and assists other staff that may need to make a report. Documents and follows up on all reports made, according to the Child Abuse and Neglect Policy.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
