Job Summary

High school junior or senior will expand their learning experiences beyond the traditional classroom. The After School Student Intern is responsible for completing projects as assigned by the Alaska Native Education Coordinator and/or After School Teacher.  These projects may include working with individual children or small groups of children, helping with homework, helping to supervise children who are outside, helping at snack time, data collection, room sanitation, developing and copying materials.  In addition the After School Intern may be asked to cover parent pick up; in which case, the responsibilities include greeting parents of the After School Program in a friendly professional and helpful way, and assuring parents sign out their children.

This position will be filled by a high school junior or senior who is interested in early childhood education and must remain in school to hold this position.

Essential Functions

The job of an After School Student Intern is done for the purpose/s of assisting in the supervision and instruction of school children; providing age appropriate activities; and assisting students with homework as may be required.

  • As directed Cleans work areas (e.g. homework work tables) for the purpose of maintaining an orderly environment.
  • Helps coordinate program activities (e.g. games, art, Dena'ina Language, homework, etc.) for the purpose of addressing the individual and/or group needs of children.
  • Evaluates situations (e.g. disciplinary problems, hazardous conditions, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action and/or requesting help from appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Interacts with children in various activities (e.g. snack time, group or individual play, Homework Place, etc.) for the purpose of providing for a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Participates in various meetings (e.g. staff development, staff meetings, etc.) for the purpose of sharing information and/or improving one's skill/knowledge.
  • Helps to sets up after-school center (e.g. opens/ closes center, games, art projects, etc.) for the purpose of providing for adequate preparation for activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

  • Working towards a High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).

Experience

  • Previous experience working with or living among Alaska Natives/Native Americans preferred.

License/Certification

  •  None

Special Skills

  • Good oral and written communication and ability to establish rapport with Kindergarten through third grade students.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Ability to lift program materials weighing up to 30 pounds.
