Job Summary

The Billing Services Advocate will serve as the main point of contact for all customers billing inquiries. The Advocate is also responsible for assisting patients and/or families to access financial resources. Under general supervision, the Advocate also aids the front desk team obtain insurance verification.  

Essential Functions

  • Available to answer questions regarding customer statements, insurance coverage, etc.
  • Work closely with customers and the Billing Representative to resolve account balance issues and establish payment plans.
  • Processes payments from customers and prepares a daily deposit.
  • Work closely with customers and Family Health Resource Technician to explore options for financial assistance for medical services.
  • Work closely with Family Health Resource Technician on follow up with appropriate customers and families for financial assistance needs.
  • Screen and assist customers in the Sliding Fee Scale application process.
  • Assist front desk staff members with verification of insurance, Medicaid, Denali Kidcare, Medicare, etc. for scheduled appointments.
  • Attend staff meetings, trainings, and continuing education as required.
  • Abide all rules and regulations regarding client confidentiality, HIPAA and 42 CFR, Part 2 regulations.
  • Adhere to Kenaitze Indian Tribe's Policies and Procedures.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Lifting Requirements

Sedentary work – Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.  Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.  Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.

  • High School Diploma or general education degree (GED) required


  • Minimum one year experience in Medical Collection, Medical Billing or health related agency required
  • Previous experience working with Alaska Natives or American Indians
  • Experience using Microsoft Office products.

Special Skills

  • Excellent communication skills to include oral and written comprehension and expression
  • Demonstrate knowledge in the healthcare revenue cycle
  • Demonstrate knowledge of current resources and programs to assist customer's need for financial resources, i.e., Medicaid programs, Social Security Disability programs.
  • Demonstrates interview skills and ability to act with sensitivity as a billing services advocate
  • Ability to work effectively and exhibit excellent customer service toward customers, visitors, staff and other agencies
  • Demonstrates strong attention to details and organization skills
  • Strong knowledge in HIPAA preferred
  • Ability to type 40 wpm.
