Tribal Fishery Education Assistant

Job Summary:

Provide assistance to Kenaitze and Salamatof Tribal Members while fishing the educational set net.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide education to participants of the fishery and visitors through personification of the Kenaitze Traditional Values including:
    • Nanutset Respect your history - by teaching the history of how the Educational Fishery came to be and the efforts of those who made it possible.
    • Henu/Daggeyi Willingness to work hard with others, cooperation and helpfulness by teaching tribal members how much more can be accomplished by working hard at the fishery together.
    • Ey'uhqats'dalts'dalts'iyi Subsistence, Life Skills by teaching the way the nets are tied on and fished, collecting and taking care of the day's catch that tribal member families can subsist on. Also teaching different ways to splice rope, clean and put away fish.
    • Chiqinik Have Thanks, Gratitude from being thankful for the opportunity to fish and enjoy the facilities at the fishery to being thankful for what does come into the net.
  • In the absence of the Tribal Harvest Program Manager, assistants are responsible for fishery permit, and curriculum, weekly fish distribution and species reporting requirements and documentation of all cultural activities on a daily basis for use in final reports.
  • Preparing designated location for the Tribe's fishery including driving stakes, setting the running lines, etc.
  • Assist with maintaining and keeping in good operation all equipment needed in the operation of the fishery, including nets, buoys, lines, blocks, vehicles, traps, weirs, etc.
  • Assists with keeping all sites neat and clean, safe as well as drug and alcohol free
  • Maintain a good working relationship with co-workers and Tribal members
  • Provide education about the Tribe and Fishery to visitors, follow Tribe's curriculum
  • Be a good representation of the Tribe, position is highly visible in community
  • Assists with the daily operations of the harvest activities under the Kenaitze Indian Tribe's Educational Fishery Plan.



  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Experience in fishing gear upkeep and repair, and in fish cleaning and preparation.


  • Current Alaska Driver's License with two years of experience preferred, a good driving record and must remain insurable under the Tribe's policy.

Special Skills:

  • Previous experience working at a fishery site preferred.
  • Able and willing to work unusual hours, determined by weather and tide.
  • Ability to read and understand a tide book, splicing, and knot tying.    
  • Willingness to learn the language, culture and history of the Dena'ina people.
